Awake until dawn
Switching sleep until eyes are weary
At wrong times of day
Getting off
All out of whack
Embarrassed by that
A bit of Johnny’s fervor and humor
A cocktail from a tiny plastic cup
Sticking the tip of your tongue into the very bottom
To lick every last red drop up
Going into the bathroom with your book and your
Phone in case a message comes while you’re not at home
Sitting for days with thoughts of brushing your teeth
Yearning to floss
And begging yourself not to eat
Your fingers flipping back and forth from page to screen to
Picking at your seat
Alone in the dark your door begins to creak
It’s just the car you forgot to take in this week
And your mind keeps humming
Fizzingfutzingfucking
Buzzing
Honey bee
That stings and leaves its tail embedded in your skin
The feeling that you should or shouldn’t have let that one in
The knowing that you don’t know where to begin
The hoping that you at least made him grin
The loathing of the places you have been
The sleeping that is interrupted by this mental din
The voice that tells you a lit screen before slumber is a sin
Better put it out then
Or have a drink of gin
Look, you’ve gone and kept yourself up all night, again.

I sawr a worm man wrrrrriggling

his fingers pinching out the last piece of his

satisfied

pie.

I sawr him eating every bloody bit

his hams hawing away at each savory morsel of his

third

eye.

I sawr two farm girls running

through the stinking swalor of the half

moon

sky.

I sawr them twitch and scratch at head

like poor Tom o’Bedlam up on the stage

near

by.

I sawr a young fellow

through the haze of the dream king’s own

dusty

high.

I sawr him watch and listen

to the stillness in between my laugh and my

soft

sigh.

It’s like I’ve been chasing you for years
Running behind you
Breathless
And now I’ve given up and I’m strolling behind you
Watching you begin to disappear
Around the bend

A year ago I would have
fallen on my sword
revealing
all of the emptiness
pouring out from ‘neath my
wounds that wouldn’t heal for months

But now I play the Tarot
and understand why the
Page of
cups has been haunting me
a reflection of my shadow self
it speaks volumes about my consistent self sabotage

Looking back there is no way I didn’t see this
coming along down the way
a bandit
a thief returning to the scene of my crime
have I really been so foolish
as to have lost myself again in an even drearier fantasy?

Shame on me
misfortune and disrepute
karma
selfishness begets selfishness
as it’s reward, a shabby thing
a just bounty for the wicked.

I may no longer kneel
and pray the rosary outside of the
confessional
after coming clean
but I have not lost the mystery and power
of that time when the smell of incense worked its sanctity upon me

I am no believer now
in anything that a man has told me
cosmos
gets tainted by a man’s tongue
so I will only believe in what I can
feel is true by virtue of experience in the present moment

but now. and if not now than never
with me you can no longer hide the truth or play hooky
you’re either in it or you are out of it.
